Client Overview
The Buffalo School District is one of New York State's premier urban school systems, serving 34,000 students across nearly 60 facilities. The district aims to bring high-quality teaching and unmatched opportunities to its diverse student population. As part of their focus on improving educational outcomes, the Buffalo School District sought to leverage data to monitor school climate, attendance, and other performance indicators.
Challenges
The U.S. Department of Education has emphasized the importance of using research on school climate to inform policies and practices in schools. The Buffalo School District needed a partner to help design and build data dashboards, including the ED School Climate Surveys (EDSCLS) dashboard and several internal-facing dashboards to better understand student and staff perceptions, track attendance, and monitor overall school climate.

The district required a way to gather and visualize school climate data from students, staff, and parents to inform decision-making and monitor progress.

Intellectyx partnered with Buffalo Public Schools to develop and implement a series of data dashboards using Microsoft Power BI to meet the district's specific requirements.
Key Features of the Solution:
- School Climate Dashboard: Developed the ED School Climate Surveys dashboard to help measure school climate and understand perceptions from students, staff, and parents. The dashboard provided actionable insights for monitoring progress and making data-driven decisions.
- Attendance Dashboard: Built an attendance dashboard that enabled tracking of attendance and absenteeism at the school, district, and special education levels, providing a detailed view of student attendance patterns.
- Data Integration and Visualization: Analyzed data sources, including Infinite Campus and MUNIS, and connected these systems to Power BI for seamless data visualization. Created and deployed dashboards and visualizations according to Buffalo Public Schools' requirements, enabling users to gain valuable insights into district performance.
- Drill-Down Capabilities: The dashboards included drill-down features to provide insights at the district, school, grade, and individual student levels, offering a comprehensive view of key performance indicators (KPIs) for schools and the district as a whole.
