Client Overview
Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) provides power and water utility services for the City of Tacoma. The Utility Technology Services (UTS) division offers advanced technology services, including utility applications, data management, analytics, and cybersecurity services, to support the city's power and water needs.
Challenges
Tacoma Public Utilities had embarked on building an advanced data analytics ecosystem using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Snowflake. As part of becoming a more data-driven utility, TPU needed an enterprise data catalog that could maintain an inventory of their data assets by discovering, describing, and organizing distributed datasets across multiple systems.
Data Fragmentation
Data assets were distributed across various systems, making it difficult to locate and leverage relevant data effectively.
Accessibility and Discoverability
TPU needed a platform to provide easy access, flexible search, and data recommendations to assist users in understanding and utilizing data efficiently.
Data Security
Ensuring data privacy and cybersecurity, especially for datasets containing personally identifiable information (PII).
Solution
Intellectyx partnered with Tacoma Public Utilities to implement DQLabs.ai, an AI-augmented data catalog platform that integrated TPU’s diverse data sources and systems.
Key Features of the Solution:
- Data Integration: DQLabs integrated TPU’s disparate data sources using built-in connectors, REST APIs, and custom connectors, seamlessly cataloging datasets.
- Centralized Metadata Repository: The platform gathered and stored technical metadata from various sources in a centralized repository, enabling better data management and understanding.
- AI and ML Recommendations: Leveraging AI and machine learning capabilities, DQLabs provided recommendations such as frequently accessed datasets, highlighted datasets containing PII for secure handling, and suggested relevant data for specific use cases.
- Self-Service Analytics: The platform allowed TPU users, including data stewards, analysts, engineers, and data scientists, to easily search, filter, and consume data across systems, including AWS, Snowflake, and SQL Server.

Results
- Enhanced Data Discoverability: TPU’s data users could easily find and understand relevant datasets, leading to faster insights and better decision-making.
- Self-Service Analytics: The platform empowered users to leverage self-service analytics, maximizing the value extracted from TPU's Snowflake data warehouse.
- Data Privacy and Cybersecurity: DQLabs helped ensure the security and privacy of sensitive data, including PII, fostering trust and compliance within the organization.
- Centralized Data Access: The data catalog acted as a one-stop solution for all data-related needs, supporting TPU in becoming a more data-driven utility.
