The top reason given for the use of open source business intelligence software is cost savings. The question is whether open source matters when it comes to license and support costs. How real are cost savings? How much does BI software and ongoing support actually cost? The answer is that open source does matter. At the entry level with a small number of users, open source can be a little to a lot less expensive. As the environment scales up the difference becomes much more noticeable. Based on some of the implementations we have done in the past and present, here is a snapshot of how the cost savings plays out at various user level.
